MMETAG Conference

Marston Vale 2050 – Your Vision for the Future

” Don’t miss the bus to the future” urged Frank Branson Mayor in a special message to a packed conference of politicians, planners and community activists from across Marston Vale, Milton Keynes and Bedford on Saturday April 18th.

The Conference – “Marston Vale 2050 – Your Vision for the Future” was hosted by the Marston Moreteyne Action Group (MMAG) formed last year in opposition to the Marston Vale Eco Town proposal. The Conference aimed to provide local people with an opportunity to design their own vision for the future of the Marston Vale that will protect the environment, jobs and homes from the developers.

Hugh Roberts Chairman of MMAG said “We are fed up with the developers taking the initiative on the future – today we have brought together those who plan for the future with those who have to live with those plans “

Colin Raine Local Resident and MMETAG member praised “people power”(referring to the A421 March, Torchlight Procession, Posters, Banners, Letters, Petitions and Website hits etc.) and the need to remain alert to proposed new and unexpected developments fot the Marston Vale.

Nadine Dorries MP said “I fundamentally believe people have the power to change things and this conference is an important step forward”

Dr Alan Apling of Bedfordshire CPRE said “Continual vigilance is vital or our landscape will be changed forever – today’s development is tomorrow’s baseline for further development”

Andrew Lockley of Milton Keynes Friends of the Earth said “You don’t stop climate change by building lots of houses in a field in the middle of nowhere – the answer lies in people living more intensively within existing housing stock”

A further conference hosted by Nadine Dorries MP will take place on May 6th at the Woburn Safari Park Lodge where a holistic approach to development built on conservation and tourism will be explored.

The conference was chaired throughout by Tricia Turner, Chairman of Central Beds Unitary Authority who in closing said “We will make Bedfordshire a destination – not a place you just pass through”.

The conference was preceded (11.30am – 12:30) by the judging of the Marston Vale Photo Competition by a panel of judges including His Grace the Duke of Bedford Click here for more information.
