PUBLIC PROTEST MEETING RE COVANTA PROPOSAL
On Saturday September 25th at The Forest Centre, Marston Vale at 10.30 – 12.30, Nadine Dorries MP will host a public meeting aimed at developing a co-ordinated strategy of public opposition to the proposed plans of the American waste giant Covanta to impose a Wembley stadium sized incinerator in Mid Bedfordshire.
The meeting will be attended by the Marston Moretaine Action Group and concerned members of the public.
Nadine said ‘ I have already made the feelings of local residents known to the Secretary of State and discussed this with the Prime Minister who has said that we need to look for more innovative ways of disposing of waste than incineration. Unfortunately, the IPC quango, which is to be abolished by the Government, has put the Covanta proposal through to the second stage of public consultation. This is because any applications that were submitted before the General Election are to be completed by the IPC.
We fought off the inappropriate Eco town development and we will fight this too, however, it will take the effort of everyone who cares about Mid Bedfordshire including stakeholders in tourism, Parish Councils and local residents. The meeting will be well attended and action leaflets detailing an effective form of opposition will be provided and discussed. Under no circumstances must the IPC be able to say at the end of the public consultation process that there were supporters for this proposal, which is what they said in each village hall they attended during the first round of consultation – I do not believe this was true and I also believe that this statement on behalf of Covanta was crucial in their ability to be passed through to the second round. It is important that as many people as possible who are prepared to do their bit in order to fight this off attend.
