Campaigners welcome the IPC!

On Friday morning 4 February, a vocal crowd braved gale force winds  to welcome two of the IPC Commissioners to Rookery Pit South. The crowd were warmed up by strongly encouraging addresses by Hugh Roberts Chair MMAG; Nadine Dorries MP ; Councillors Alan Bastable and Tim Hill; Bedford Borough Deputy Mayor Charles Royden and Mayoral candidate John Guthrie.

The diverse crowd represented all parts of the local community and were united in their opposition to Covanta and their plans for a monster incinerator. A surprising delay in the Commissioners being able to pay their cab fare, led to an unexpected opportunity for the crowd, chanting “say no”, to surround the cab and ensure that the community’s voice was heard loud and clear!

Hugh Roberts as well as Sue Clark (representing the 24 Parish Councils opposing Covanta) then joined the Commissioners for a tour of the proposed site.

The event drew excellent media coverage. Heart FM and Three Counties Radio interviewed Hugh Roberts prior to the event. On the day, all local radio and newspapers were joined by BBC Look East who featured the event on their lunchtime and evening programmes.
